Mission of the VEF:

To bring new life to the Via Egnatia and the regions around it, so that Via Egnatia can again become a way to connect people, through contact and exchange of knowledge and culture.
The concrete part of this mission is to help develop Via Egnatia into a cross-border hiking trail. The relational side is to stimulate cooperation and exchange between people, organizations and experts involved in the Via Egnatia.
All the activities of VEF have one common focus: to further social and economic development of the regions along Via Egnatia, and ultimately friendship and peace by connecting people from many countries.

Principles of VEF:

  1. This is not our road. Nor is VE anybody else's property. VE is part of a common cultural heritage that is worth to be protected and preserved.
  2. VEF is a non-profit organization.
  3. Communication with and tuning in with local population and organizations on an equal basis.
  4. Respect for environment; nature and culture.
  5. Cooperation and teamwork on all levels of the organization.
  6. Diverse talents and contributions are valued in the VEF.
  7. Crucial decisions about Via Egnatia should be based as much as possible on scientific research.
  8. Stimulation of interdisciplinary and international research on VE.
  9. Historical educational material should be based on common history.
  10. Focus on cross-border activities rather than only local activities.
  11. Encouraging tourism that is based on real interest in and commitment to the VE region.
  12. To stimulate creativity and pleasure on all levels and in all (sub)projects.

Examples of what VEF does:

  • Making a book and a documentary about life along Via Egnatia
  • Youth-exchange programs connected with archeological sites, as well as between schools along VE
  • Archeological events along VE for in- and outsider
  • Making a common database on the archaeology of VE
  • Research into "migration along Via Egnatia"
  • Developing educational material based on Via Egnatia’s common history
  • Organizing concerts with musicians from all involved countries along VE
  • Organizing a traveling exhibition about history of VE
  • Helping with preservation and reconstruction of the road itself
  • Supporting local initiatives like small Bed&Breakfast’s, donkey-stations

Examples of what VEF does not:

  • We do not organize touristic events
  • We do not fund non-VEF initiatives
  • We do not impose projects on local people against their wish
  • We do not engage with nationalistic organizations or ideas
  • We do not take sides in conflicts between nations

Again: the aim of all this scientific, human and cultural endeavor is to contribute to the development of the regions along Via Egnatia, and ultimately to friendship and peace, by connecting people.

(...) That’s the whole
point of being a path: it came to be made
long ago. Who made it? Charcoal burners, fisherfolk,
women with skinny arms, gathering firewood?
The outlaws, shysters, gray as the moss,
Still in their dreams the blood of fratricide
reddens their hands. Autumn hunters on the tracks
of pointer dogs with barks clear as frost?
All of them, none of them. We make the path together,
you too, on a stormy day, on earth,
be the hour late or early:
we write the paths and they stick,
and the paths are more clever than us,
and they know all the things we wanted to know.

Via Egnatia Foundation is set up to inspire this old road with new life

The Via Egnatia Foundation aims to promote interest for the region around the Via Egnatia and thus pay a contribution to the development of this region. Officially the goals of the Via Egnatia Foundation (VEF) are stated as: "To stimulate interest in and development of the (region around) the Via Egnatia, in cultural, economical and social respect, by means of publications, research, education, restoration, exhibitions and other means that can further this interest and development."
In short: the VEF is about CONNECTION and EXCHANGE. That is to say exchange of knowledge and cultural goods between the people living along the Via Egnatia, and also between them and western countries. The VEF wants to initiate a process of research, exploration and dialogue along the itinerary of the Via Egnatia and to report about that process. Focus will be on the life along the road, as expressed in commerce, language, religion, art and music. These themes will be explored by means of interviews with local people and by research of various historical sources. The Road is therefore both guideline and symbol of interaction. We hope to initiate an ongoing process of development and cooperation and thereby inspire this old road with new life. There will be meetings and letters, books and documentaries, concerts and exhibitions. There will be research and conferencing. And there will be a lot of traveling along the Via Egnatia, on foot, on horseback, by virtual means and by car.

The Foundation has obtained the enthusiastic cooperation of scholars and experts on the various aspects of social, historical and cultural life in the countries covered by the road.

To be clear: all this Via Egnatia activity is not a commercial enterprise. We are a foundation; there is no personal financial gain for any of the participants. Nor is the purpose of the VEF a touristic one: exchange and development is our first aim. Neither is this a political endeavor; we take no sides: our goal is to achieve transnational cooperation, avoid bilateral clashes and focus on mutual interests instead. The ultimate goal of all the activities of the VEF is to stimulate awareness and validation of the cultural unity as well as the ethnocultural variety in the region.

We have established a relationship with the primary school in Dardhë which is in desperate need of improvement (Read more...)!
Parts of the track in Albania need maintenance, because it is quite hazardous to pass there now.
Inhabitants of villages have to be stimulated and helped to provide Bed & Breakfast for walkers.

Support

First of all you support the Via Egnatia by WALKING along the road.
A guide bookwhich covers the trail from Durrës in Albania to Thessaloniki in Greece is published by the VEF. Experience the beauty of the landscape, enjoy the exercise, meet the friendly Albanians and leave some money for the hospitality.
Walking other parts of Via Egnatia and sharing your findings with us can help us to extend the mapping of the road and build connections with local people who should benefit from this historical landmark.

You can become a member of a local support group like the one that has recently been established in Turkey.

If you are a musician and like to play Balkan music: several musicians are allready involved. Read more...about the music group.
